Upendra graduated as a dentist and taught at the Government Dental College and Hospital (Ahmedabad) before transiting to public health. He did a masterā€™s degree in public health with a major in health promotion at Deakin University (Melbourne). He returned to India and joined the Institute of Public Health (Bangalore) in 2007. Since then, he is with the Institute serving in different roles. He is currently Director and the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance Fellow.
